More about Hamilton, VA

Located in Loudoun Valley of Loudoun County, Hamilton is a very small community set near the western edge of the Catoctin Mountain. The community is just six miles west of the county seat, Leesburg. The estimated population of Hamilton in 2010 was just over 500 people.

History

What is today known as the town of Hamilton, was once the home of several tribes native to the Virginia territory. In the early 1730s, European settlers arrived in the area and by 1768 the town began to develop. The first home in Hamilton was built by George and Tabitha Roach Tavenner. The Tavenner’s son, Richard, would later build an estate nearby which he and his wife called Harmony. This estate lead ot the area around Hamilton to be known as Harmony.

In 1831 a road was built connecting the town to Leesburg and nearby Snickersville. This road lead to the eventual growth of the community. By 1833, the population was large enough to sustain a church congregation. The Harmony Methodist Church was built on land that was donated by the Tavenner family. Much later the community began to be referred to as Hamilton, due to the local general store owned by Bennett Hamilton. In 1835, Hamilton became the official town name when a post office, located in the general store, was approved by President John Quincy Adams.

The community of Hamilton played its small part in the American Civil War. The last battle in the county took place in the nearby territory on March 21st, 1865. In what became known as The Harmony Skirmish, Confederate troops lead by Colonel John S. Mosby took Union Colonel Marcus Reno and his men by surprise in a small victory. Just a few years later after the war, the community was once again incorporated to the surrounding region in 1868 with the addition of stop on the future Washington and Old Dominion Railroad line, built for a steam engine to travel from Alexandria. This rail line lead to many tourists and visitors to Hamilton, hoping to explore and get out of the city. Tourists loved to spend their time on the over mile long stretch of boardwalk that stretched across the town as well as visiting the dance hall in the evenings. By 1900 the small community had become the second largest town in Loudoun County. Local businesses at the time included two local newspapers, a butcher shop, as well as clothing stores, hardware stores, and a stable and boarding house. Just over 20 years later a larger fire destroyed many of the town’s booming businesses. A decline in tourism lead to the decision to not rebuild and reopen, changing the face of the town from a business district to more of a residential community.

Today

Today the community of Hamilton is just 0.2 square miles in total area. The community is made up mostly of families. Despite the declines in the population in the 2000s it is estimated that the population of Hamilton would increase by over 20% by 2016. At the last census, over 90% of the population was white, and Hispanics and African Americans made up just over 1% of the population respectively.
