More about Paeonian Springs, VA

Located in the northeast corner of the state, Paeonian Springs is a very small community in Loudoun County, Virginia. The county seat of Loudoun County is Leesburg, located just a few miles to the east of the village. Today, Paeonian Springs remains an unincorporated community. The unincorporated town sits at the major intersection of Charles Town Pike and Virginia State Route 7.

History

The town of Paeonian Springs was established in 1890. Construction of the town began in 1871 with the intention of developing a small resort town for residents of Washington DC who were looking for a weekend summer getaway. Additionally, the summer heat in the city lead to the easy spread of many diseases, giving residents a reason to look for a summer escape in the country. The original advertising slogan for the resort town set in the Blue Ridge Mountains was “excellent water, mountain air, and magnificent scenery”. The town was named for the Ancient Greek figure, Paean, who was believed to the be the god of medicine. At the time it was hinted that the mountain spring water in the area had some healing and medicinal value. The town originally developed and became popular quickly, thanks to the help of the Washington and Ohio Railroad which made up to 8 stops in the town daily. Later this railway would become the Washington and Old Dominion railroad. By the start of the 1900s the town had three hotels, a small downtown for shopping that was easy access from the train depot, and a village green. Soon thereafter a boardwalk was built downtown, as well as a church, schools, and many new shops to expand the shopping area.

In the beginning of the 1920s, the allure of Paeonian Springs faded for tourists and the town began to decline. The town’s famous and heavily traveled boardwalk decayed, and the mill was wiped out by a fire in 1929. Additionally, the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act made it difficult for local entrepreneurs to continue to make claims about the healing powers of the local springs. Concurrently, the rise and popularity of the automobile resulted in the decline in the use of the local railway. The number of stops in Paeonian Springs decreased with the decline in rail use. The school student bodies were absorbed into the local public school system and students attended schools nearby in communities such as Leesburg. The population of the town decreased, and it remained a small unincorporated community.

Today

Today, the village of Paeonian Springs does not appear to be much different from the village it was in the beginning of the 1900s. The village still includes a post office serving many of the nearby local residents. In 2006, the Paeonian Springs Historic District, including the downtown area, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, helping to preserve the old Victorian houses, quaint country cottages, and open spaces that once attracted the summer travelers to the small resort village.
