More about Taylorstown, VA

Located in Loudoun County, Taylorstown is a small community set on the edge of the Catoctin Creek on the Northern Edge of Virginia. The estimated population of Taylorstown today is approximately four thousand people and continues to grow. The community is no longer an official Virginia township, and this population estimate is defined by families and individuals who live within a three-mile (5 km) radius of the old Taylorstown town center.

History

The community of Taylorstown was first settled in 1734 by Richard Brown. Brown was a Quaker from Bucks County, Pennsylvania who came to the area near the creek to set up a mill in the early 1730s. Brown purchased a large plot of land to set up the mill and a farm that reached all the way to the Potomac River. In 1734, on the plot, Brown built a small house which was the first building constructed in Taylorstown. The house would later be referred to as the Hunting Hill House and is today the oldest building in Loudoun County. After his death, Brown’s land was divided amongst his wife and five sons. The tract of land containing what became the community was passed down through the sons until it was sold to Thomas Taylor, a well-off Quaker from Maryland. Taylor was also interested in the milling industry. Taylor lived in the Hunting Hill home and built a new stone mill. Today the mill is known as the Taylorstown Mill. After the mill was built, Taylor sold off plots of land surrounding the mill, approximately a quarter acre in size. Those who purchased the plots and settled began to refer to the area as Taylor Town, which would eventually become Taylorstown. The Mill remained in operation until 1932 when it was converted into a feed store. Later in the 1950s the store was purchased by Anna Hendrick and converted into a private residence.

From the time it was established officially by Thomas Taylor, the community of Taylorstown transformed from a small settlement of residents into a prospering agricultural community. In the area, three different mills were operating and the surrounding farms were developed and became fruitful. Additionally, the nearby Furnace Mountain attracted miners for iron mining between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was during this period that Taylorstown and the surrounding area was the most densely populated community in the county.

Today

Today, no longer an official state township, the community has been divided up among neighboring towns of Leesburg, Lovettsville, Lucketts, and Waterford. This division has led to much confusion for the residents of what was once Taylorstown, with some residents having the address of one town and the phone number of another. Children attend the school district based on which bus route is the closest, as the division is not even clear for school boundaries. However, the population remains unique and economically diverse. The homes range from small Creekside cabins with no working plumbing to large riverside mansions worth millions of dollars.
