The Dental Implant Procedure

Whether a tooth is pulled due to infection and decay, or there simply is an accident knocks a patient’s tooth out, it’s important for the patient to have their tooth replaced as soon as possible. This will allow for the proper ongoing oral health of the patient, and will also keep the gums, jawbone and surrounding teeth strong.

If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, or if you have a tooth that is scheduled to be pulled, you’ll want to consider different replacement options. One popular option is dental implants.

What Are Implants?

Dental implants are dental appliances that are placed in the jawbone, and hold a false tooth in place.

Why Would I Need an Implant?

No matter what option you go with, it’s important to replace a tooth that is missing. A missing tooth can cause major damage to your jawbone, causing it to deteriorate. It will also often lead to crowding, in which the teeth migrate and bunch up. This can in turn lead to infections, disease and decay.

Dental implants are an excellent replacement option because of their cosmetic appearance, durability and longevity. Dental implants can withstand a good amount of bite pressure, and allow patients to chew much like they used to. Dental implants also closely resemble the look of natural teeth—allowing the patient to smile with confidence.

The Implant Procedure

The actual placement procedure begins with a trip to the dentist either for an extraction, or for a consultation about the best options for replacement. During the extraction, the dentist may decide that a bone graft is necessary to ensure the durability of the jawbone. If this is the case, a few months may need to go by for the graft to properly take. If the tooth is already missing, the dentist will consider whether or not the jawbone is strong enough to handle the implant. If it is not, they may consider a bone graft to place the implant.

Once the dentist is ready for the procedure, they will provide anesthesia to ensure the patient feels no pain. From there, they will place a titanium rod into the jawbone. The area will be given time to heal, and for the rod to fuse with the bone. The dentist will then place the abutment, and finally the full crown.

Am I a Candidate?

Dental implants are an excellent replacement option, but they are not right for all patients. During a consultation, your dentist will decide whether or not your jawbone is durable enough to handle the procedure. If it is not, they may consider a bone graft. Cost also may be an issue, as dental implants are often more expensive upfront than other options.

Speak with your dentist before an extraction about what tooth replacement option is right for you. If you have a missing tooth, meet with your dentist as soon as possible to discuss replacement options.
