Services Dentists Offer

While when people think about going to the dentist they may think of going for a cleaning and checkup, these aren’t the only services that dentists provide. There are a lot of different services that dentists can provide for patients—including specialty services that only certain dentists are qualified for.

General Dentistry

The most common field of dentistry is general dentistry. A general dentist provides checkups and cleanings for patients, to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the patient’s oral care.

During an oral exam, the dentist will check for decay, disease and other damage to the teeth, gums, cheeks, tongue and jawbone. They will also check the patient’s bite. If it’s been a while since a patient’s last visit, a dentist may take x-rays for a more in-depth look at a patient’s teeth and jaw.

A general dentist will also provide a cleaning. Using special tools, they will remove tartar, plaque and debris from the teeth. This will help the patient to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. If there is buildup under the gums, a patient may need to undergo a deep cleaning to resolve the issue.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry is the field of dentistry that involves the care of children. A pediatric dentist specializes in the treatment of primary teeth, but may also provide services to older children and even teenagers. Some family dentists provide pediatric services, while also providing dental services for the adults in the family.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that involves procedures that improve the aesthetic look of a patient’s teeth and gums. Cosmetic services may also be provided for practical reasons—but not all cosmetic procedures are for the patient’s oral health. Instead, many cosmetic services are provided to boost the patient’s confidence, self-image and self-esteem.
Some more practical cosmetic procedures include dental implants, dental crowns and veneers.

These procedures help to restore a patient’s teeth, and give the patient the functionality that was compromised when their teeth were damaged.

Emergency and Restorative Services

There are times when a dental emergency occurs, and a patient needs to have a procedure provided immediately. When this is the case, a patient will need to find a practice that performs emergency dentistry.

For pain, swelling, damage or other issues, a patient will also want to set an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible. While the pain or damage may not constitute an “emergency,” the issue still needs to be addressed to avoid any further damage to the teeth, gums or jawbone.

The field of dentistry is pretty broad, so specialists may be required for certain services. For cleanings, checkups and basic services, a general dentist is an excellent option. For certain cosmetic or emergency services, though, a specialist may be required.

Speak with your dentist about the services they are able to provide, and if they are the best provider for your specific needs. If you have an emergency or an issue between regular visits, make sure to contact your dentist immediately.
