Fix Missing Teeth

While the loss of a natural tooth is unfortunate, there are numerous options available to replace a missing tooth. This article includes a description of the most common methods currently used to replace missing teeth.

Removable Partial Denture

It can be embarrassing and unsightly to have missing teeth. This can be especially obvious when the front teeth are missing. A removable, partial denture, worn during the day, can be a solution for replacing one or more missing teeth. In some cases, partial dentures require a metal clasp as an anchor in the mouth. One downside is that the metal clasps are sometimes visible. It is also possible for removable partial dentures to move when you are speaking or eating. Patients are encouraged to remove the dentures overnight to soak them in a cleaning solution. One benefit with partial dentures is that the natural teeth are not filed down. This solution is also the most affordable. Dentures are able to replace missing teeth located on the top or bottom jaw.

Temporary Denture

A temporary denture is a short-term solution dentists use to replace missing teeth. It may also be called a flipper as it quickly flips in and out. This solution is used when the tooth will be fully restored in the future through the use of an implant or bridge, which require the patient to wait for the area to heal. Temporary dentures are similar in many ways to a removable partial denture, but typically less sturdy, less bulky, and less expensive. When a flipper is used, the surrounding teeth are not impacted.

Bridge

A bridge is an option which can be used in cases where there are teeth adjacent to both sides of the missing tooth. A bridge is considered to be a fixed solution which is cemented in the mouth and cannot be removed. This process for a bridge involves cutting down the teeth next to the missing tooth in order to connect them together. One disadvantage of bridges is the teeth need to be cut down which may be otherwise healthy. In some cases, bridges placed in the lower jaw do not last as long because the jaw flexes and the unbendable bridge can spring a leak. This leak allows decay and bacteria to seep into the affected area. The teeth next to the gap may require a filling or crown. A bridge can also be used to easily replace one or two missing teeth. When there is adequate support, additional teeth can be replaced.

Dental Implant

An implant is an excellent solution which is used to replace missing teeth. Implants are the most similar to having a natural tooth in both their appearance and function. The implant replaces the root of the tooth and actually fuses to the jaw bone over time. An abutment is then placed, which is used to attach the crown. One main advantage of an implant is that the other teeth are not impacted whatsoever. An implant is a great solution for patients with a single tooth missing. It is nearly impossible to detect the difference between a natural tooth and an implant.

No Action

Another option is to choose to not do anything. When teeth are removed, the bone reabsorbs and the adjacent teeth can move. This can create challenges when cleaning the teeth and lead to other issues including bone loss and decay. Many patients do not like the appearance of a missing tooth and the decline of function.
