Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park

The well preserved site of a civil war battle, Ball’s Bluff Regional Park is home to a small national cemetery, as well as seven miles of woodland trials with stunning views of the Bluff and the Potomac River. Visitors can join a guided tour and get lesson in Virginia and colonial history or explore the trials on their own using self-guided tours mapped out in the brochures offered year round.

Red Rock Wilderness Overlook

Set on the edge of the Potomac River, the Red Rock Wilderness Overlook offers miles of hiking trails that include views of the surrounding foothills and the river. The trials are managed by The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and range from moderate to strenuous. The Red Rock Wilderness Overlook is easy to access and just a short drive outside of the Leesburg Town limits.

Leesburg Town Parks

Inside the town limits, Leesburg offers 16 community parks. The parks range in size, but offer many features including open spaces, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, fields for soccer and baseball, courts for basketball and tennis, as well as picnic spots and hiking trials. The Leesburg Parks & Recreation Department are responsible for maintaining the 16 parks including the community park plots and 138 acres of Ida Lee Park. The newly created Bike Trial Network offers over 10 miles of share-use paths connecting to trails in town to the W&OD Trial.

Rust Nature Sanctuary

On the grounds of the Rust Manor House, the Rust Nature Sanctuary is 68 acres of gardens, wooded forests areas, and meadows. Visitors can enjoy the hiking trails, take courses on nature and flora provided by the Audubon Naturalist Society or visit the 20th century mansion to take a step back in history. The Nature Sanctuary includes six different habitats including homes to birds, animals, and flowers. Additionally, there are nature activities and programs available for kids. The grounds are open from dusk to dawn daily for visitors and trail maps are available online.

W&OD Trail

Once the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, the W&OD trail has been converted into 45 paved miles of walking, running, and biking trails. The trails are maintained by NOVA Parks and run west to Purcellville and south all the way to Alexandria, VA. Running adjacent to the paved trails there are 32 miles of gravel trails for equestrian riders. Those out to enjoy the trail can jump on at any of the several access points.

Potomac Heritage Trail

A national scenic trail, the Potomac Heritage Trail is an interconnected trail network running along the corridor of the Potomac from Virginia to Pennsylvania. The trail network can be explored on foot, bike or by horse. The trail network runs through Leesburg and includes the trials of the Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park.
