History
Originally names Farmwell after a nearby mansion owned by George Lee III. He call the plantation that in his will back in 1802. In 1841 a John Janney purchased about 580 acres and called his tract Ashburn Farm. This was put in writing in 1870. It was thought that Ashburn was a friend’s name. An entertaining spin on the origination is that an ash tree was struck by lighting and burned for days creating quite a stir! Like much of Virginia, the area started as plantations and large farms. Small villages and towns grew out of the necessity to service those operations. The Loudoun County area began back in 1725. The first settlers were Quakers, Germans, Irish and Scottish. Often times the villages grew out of ethnic support. The county played a huge role in both the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
Ashburn Today
Ashburn, and the county, really exploded with the introduction of the airport in the 1960s. An entire Dulles Technology Corridor has sprung from the growth. Ashburn is the home to several science and technology based companies. This includes the government contractor Telos, a regional office for Verizon Business and the east region cloud computing center for Amazon plus AOL and Orbital ATK Inc. You’ll also find the Science and Technology Campus for George Washington University in Ashburn along with the Research Campus for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This leads to a low unemployment rate of only 3.2%. Another piece of evidence to represent growth is the addition of One Loudoun in the center of town. This brand new mixed-use development downtown features outdoor concerts, 5K races, farmers’ markets, and many other events, retail shops and entertainment venues. There are many condominiums in this development as well as offices. Truly a mixed-use area! There is also a planned baseball stadium designed to be the centerpiece of the development. This commitment to the development of downtown added thousands of new single-family homes in the market. Ashburn in the sports circles is known as the corporate headquarters and home training facility for the NFL Washington Redskins. The residents that call Ashburn home are extremely appreciative of the strong economy, the sense of community pride and the amenities that are associated with a strong municipality, and the low crime rate enhancing family values. This contributes to the fact that Loudoun County is considered the richest county in the United States with a median household income of $123,966.
