More about Chantilly, VA

Chantilly is a community located in northern Virginia, in the central part of Fairfax County. The community is located between Centreville, Herndon, and Fairfax, and about 25 miles to the west of the Washington DC. A popular suburb of the greater
Washington DC metropolitan area, the community provides easy access to the city via U.S. Route 50 and interstate 66. Two major thoroughfares, Route 50 and Route 28 intersect here, connecting the suburb to the technology corridor of Dulles/Reston/Tysons Corner and other major employers of the Northern Virginia area.

In 2010, the population of the community surpassed 23,000 residents. Chantilly has been named a Census Designated Place (CDP) by the US Census Bureau.

History

Like many of the communities in Northern Virginia, Chantilly has a unique and storied history. In the early 18th century, the area was home to several colonial plantations, including the Sully plantation, the George Richard Lee Turberville “Leeton Grove” plantation, and the Chantilly plantation. Leeton Grove was one of the largest of these plantations, originally summing to over 5,000 acres. The Chantilly plantation was originally part of the great Leeton Grove. In 1817, George Richard Lee Turberville’s daughter, Cornelia Lee Turberville Stuart inherited a portion of her father’s plantation. On this inherited land, Stuart and her husband built the Chantilly mansion and named it after a plantation in Westmoreland County, which was owned by her grandfather. The original town was first named after the Chantilly mansion and farm. The name originally came from the Château de Chantilly, a French Chateau that is located about 25 miles north of Paris.

The Civil War saw many battles in Northern Virginia, especially in Fairfax County, including the Battle of Ox Hill in 1862. The great Chantilly mansion, and many of the nearby plantations were destroyed by Union armies with fire during the Civil War.

Today

Today the only property that remains on the plantation is an old stone house. It is unclear today what the stone house was originally used for, but evidence suggests it was either an overseers quarters during the antebellum period or perhaps a tavern post Civil War. After the war, with a destroyed mansion and severe insurmountable debt, Cornelia Stuart had no choice but to sell her family’s land, including the mansion.

After the Civil War the village went through a period of significant growth. Much of this growth was due to the building of the Little River Turnpike which connected the village to Winchester. In the 1980s, developers transformed the area into many subdivisions and commercial properties, creating the suburb that is Chantilly today.

Today the community is made up of 7,218 households in a total area of 12.2 square miles. Over 60% of these households are married couples living together and over 45% are home to children under the age of 18. The population of Chantilly is becoming more diverse. Over 50% of the population is white, 25% is Asian, and 16% is Hispanic/Latino. Washington Dulles Airport is located nearby and provides employment for many residents.
