History
Floris, Virginia is a small community located in Fairfax County. Its population today is just over 8,000 people. It is located along a few of Washington D.C.’s busiest highways and right next to Dulles International Airport.
The history of the region is rich and dates back to well before the Europeancolonists began to settle the area. The native inhabitants to region were the Algonquin speaking tribe, the Taux. Captain John Smith made note of them in 1608 upon his arrival from England. The area of Fairfax County originally belonged to Lord Fairfax. Thomas Fairfax, his direct descendent, was the only member of British nobility to ever live in the colonies.
The region played an important role during the Civil War. It’s proximity to the border between the Confederacy and the Union gave it strategic importance. As a result, the region changed hands constantly throughout the war. The region suffered greatly at the end of the war because both armies left a scorched earth retreat multiple times. The agriculture in the community took a long time to recover. Fortunately though, the community’s proximity to Washington D.C. allowed it to recover faster than many communities further south.
During the Second World War, the federal government grew tremendously. This growth caused Fairfax County to grow as well. This eventually led to the suburbanization of the entire county. Today that suburbanization is on full display all over the county, including Floris.
Things to do
There are several educational sites near Floris. These include museums and historical sites. The closest to the town are Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This center is a flight and space museum and is an interesting place to learn about the history of air travel. The Sully Historic Site is also a short drive away from the community. This old plantation is now a National Historic Site and its beautiful grounds are definitely worth checking out. There are many other historic sites within driving distance of the town as well. The most well known in Fairfax County is Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is the home of America’s first president, George Washington. Visitors are able to tour the museum and plantation grounds and take in the amazing history of the nation’s first leader. Other sites include the Manassas National Battlefield Park, which commemorates two of the largest battles of the Civil War, the National Firearms Museum, and the Children’s Science Center Lab. In addition to all of these spots, Washington D.C. is only a short commute away and there you will find some of the nation’s top museums and educational opportunities.
There are also several parks and places of recreation around Floris. One of the best-known parks is Great Falls Park. The beauty of this park is unmatched in the area. Additional parks include the Meadowlands Botanical Gardens, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, Foutainhead Regional Park, Mason Neck State Park, Lake Fairfax Park, the Water Mine Family Swimming Hole, and the Eleanor C. Lawrence Park. The area is rich in nature and these parks are just a few of many to choose from.
