Great Falls is a community located on the northern border of Virginia, in the Northwest corner of Fairfax County. Due to its location, the community is considered a suburb of Washington DC, but is part of both the Washington Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The community is located on Virginia Route 7, with Washington DC just 15 miles away. This location provides community residents with convenient access to both Washington DC and Maryland. Great Falls is community with a total area of 25 square miles. In 2010, according to the US Census the population of the community was over 15,427 residents and had increased 80.5% from 2000. Despite the dramatic population growth, the community remains unincorporated and has been named a Census Designated Place (CDP) by the US Census Bureau. Great Falls lies on the bank of the Potomac River, with the river forming both the northern and eastern border of the community.
History
Although Fairfax is known for being a suburban county, the county has a rich colonial history. In the late 1700s, most of the county was settled by farmers in small farm settlements. Most of these first farm settlements were along the Potomac River. The county was central to the Civil War, with many battles taking place across the region. Later when the federal government was growing and Washington DC became the capital of the United States, Fairfax and the surrounding counties grew to accommodate the expanding economy and job market. When the village was first founded it was known as Forestville, but the name was changed to Great Falls in 1955.
Today
Fairfax county was the first county in the US to reach a six-figure median household income. In 2011, Great Falls was named first in the nation by CNNMoney on the list of “top earning towns” in the US. In 2000, the median household income was over $189,000. Of the 4,977 households, over 80% belonged to married couples living together. The population of Great Falls boomed in 2010, but the increase in the population in recent years is estimated to be less than 10%. The population is becoming more diverse, but currently is 80% White, with only small percentages from other racial/ethnic groups. The community has three local elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The local public schools are all a part of the Fairfax County Public School District.
The Great Falls of the Potomac River, for which the community is named after, are located to the eastern edge of the community. The Falls are located in Great Falls Park, a major attraction in the county. Besides the falls, the park includes artifacts of a canal that George Washington was helping build and a small village called Matildaville. Other popular destinations in the community include River Bend County Park and the Village Green. The Green is the community gathering place for holiday celebrations including Spring Festivals, Fourth of July activities, and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies.
