History
Purcellville, Virginia has a rich history that dates back to the last days of the British colonial rule and the early days of the new republic. Lord Fairfax gave out the fist land grant in the area in 1740. This allowed James Dillon to move from Pennsylvania and start establishing the soon to be town. The town was eventually centered on the “Great Road” which would prove to be a major road in the area of Loudoun County. Almost 60 years later, the town would eventually begin to grow and establish businesses. The first known businesses in the town were ordinaries along the Great Road.
In 1785, the Great Road became an authorized turnpike. This eventually led to the first stagecoaches passing through Purcellville in the mid 1800’s. After the turnpike was established, the railroad came through. The first railroad to connect the town to Leesburg was built before the Civil War. Both of these transportation systems allowed the town to grow.
During the Civil War, the town was spared any major fighting. Both the Union and Confederate troops did pass through the town however. The town also changed hands several times. The town eventually incorporated in 1908. The early 20th century was very hard on the community though. Several fires ripped through the downtown district over a 15-year period, which eventually nearly wiped out the whole business district. Luckily for the community, the agriculture in the area was able to sustain it through those times. The business district was eventually rebuilt and expanded. As the transportation network in the region expanded and the metropolitan area grew, the suburban feel of the community began to take shape.
Today the population is around 9,000 people. The community is apart of one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. The county is home to nearly 1000 federal government prime contractors specializing in information and communication technology. The area is well employed and has been rated the happiest county in the U.S. for two consecutive years.

One of the most notable is the Udvar-Hazy National Air & Space Museum. There are also several historical buildings and Civil War sites to see. In addition to the museums, the county is home to several small towns that all have their own unique charm and downtown districts. Purcellville is one of them. The downtown business district is home to shopping, dining, and entertainment. Additionally, the area is becoming known for its wine culture. There are over 40 wineries in Loudoun County. The wine tasting and wine touring industries are really starting to develop. A few of the top wineries around the town are Sunset Hill Vineyard, 8 Chains North Winery, Casanel Vineyards and Winery, Crushed Cellars, and Goose Creek Farms & Winery. There are also miles of waterfront, bike trails, nature trails, and public parks in the county. If you can’t find what you are looking for in the immediate vicinity, you are only a short drive from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
