The Dulles Greenway defines that area between Washington DC and Leesburg, Virginia. The cities and town are diverse in nature. The biggest determining factor is that of being an older community with history, or a newer planned city. Reston is the later. With that having been said it is a master planned community that is internationally known. Here is some history and how that recognition came to pass.
History
The area was a 7,300 acre farm for many, many years. In 1934, right after the end of Prohibition, some ground was sold and a distillery was built. It was the only legal whiskey distillery in Virginia into the 1950s. In 1961 a gentleman by the name of Robert E. Simon bought the farm except 60 acres for the distillery, which operated as such until 1987. Simon’s family had just sold Carnegie Hall and he wanted to invest his earnings. In 1964, on his 50th birthday, he started Reston. The first three characters are his initials. It became one of the first modern, post- World War II planned communities in the United States. In doing so they incorporated higher density housing to in turn conserve more open, natural space. Through strict planning and zoning the mixed use areas for industry, business, recreation, education and housing was controlled at all times.
Reston Today
The growth and development of the community garnered international attention. In fact, it was ahead of its time with the new urbanism in the 1970s and 1980s. An important part of the development of Reston is that it has five different villages with one town center. Each center was all designed to be no more than a half mile from any home. The first village, Lake Anne Plaza was designed to replicate an Italian coastal town. There are local businesses only in Lake Anne; no chains are allowed. Lake Anne village center was just named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. The city of 60,000 residents has all the trappings of a well- planned out community with its parks, trails, pools and a multitude of planned events both indoors and outdoors. What makes Reston different is the guiding principles of this new town movement.
There were seven primary goals in developing the city, many around design and form and function. But some relate to life style. To be able to grow old and stay within your home town and always have all amenities accessible no matter what the age. Many residents work within Reston or nearby in one of the high tech businesses in the Dulles Technology Corridor. Reston sits directly between Leesburg and Washington DC with a 20 mile drive in either direction. The diversity of the area offers up many, many activities to keep your family busy. Fishing, canoeing and kayaking on the Potomac to hiking and biking the endless trails are good outdoor starters. There are historical sites everywhere as well as plantations and vineyards. There is no loss for museums, dining and evening entertainment. Reston Virginia, where the planning paid off!
