South Riding is a community located on the very northern tip of Virginia, in northern Loudon County. Although it is not officially incorporated, South Riding is a planned community and a popular suburb of the greater Washington DC metropolitan area. The suburb is located on U.S. Route 50 and State Route 28, providing excellent commuter access to the Dulles/Reston/Tysons technology corridor and to Washington DC. In 2010, the population of the community was over 24,500 residents and has continued to grow. The planned community has been named a Census Designated Place (CDP) by the US Census Bureau.

History

While the larger Loudon county has a rich and storied history, the community is relatively young with a short history. Many of the nearby communities including: Aldie, Leesburg, and Middleburg have historic landmarks, battlefields, and preserved downtown districts that pay tribute to this history. South Riding has been developed to meet the needs of the growing federal government and the modern Virginia commuters, all while being set in this beautiful and well-loved Virginia countryside.

Today

South Riding is an affluent suburb of the Washington DC metro area. According to the 2014 census, the median household income for the community was over $140,000. The housing market in the community is competitive and the average price for homes is between $500,000 and $625,000. According to the U.S. Census American Community Survey, Loudoun county is one of the only communities in the US with an average six-figure median income for its residents. With the constantly growing population in the community, the demographic makeup is in a period of change. In 2010, almost 75% of the population was White, however over the past decade the African American population was expected to grow by 37%, the Asian population by 90%, and the Hispanic population by 81%.

There are four elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools in the community. There are schools in nearby communities that also serve residents of South Riding. It is not a surprise that the community values its education, considering Loudon County ranks as the 10th most educated county in the United States. The suburb offers many outdoor activities and community events for local residents and tourists. The community South Riding farmers market is every Saturday morning between mid-April to late October. The South Riding Golfer’s Club is an 18-hole golf course with a championship layout designed by Dan Maples. Throughout the summer, residents can enjoy regularly scheduled community events, including drive-in movie nights, community campouts, and weekly pool parties. Overall, Loudoun county is a great place to live and to visit. A break from the busy cities, the suburb is set in a beautiful county that is known for its vineyards, craft beer, golf courses, and picturesque rolling hills. Additionally, the county offers hiking, biking trials, kayaking adventures, and access to the famous Appalachian Trail. Just in the small community of South Riding, there are 4 miles of paved biking and pedestrian trials, 14 community parks, and a local fishing pier for the local outdoor enthusiasts.
