History
Stone Ridge is located in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is apart of the Aldie Township. It is a relatively new development that is still being developed. It is being developed by Van Metre Homes as a mixed-use community. The development will hopefully include a future office and industrial park. It currently has a medical triangle and professional center.
Aldie Township is located along the historic Route 50 Corridor. This is also known as the John Mosby Highway, which follows the path that the local tribes used to follow game into the Shenandoah Valley from the Potomac River. Aldie was apart of the expanding English settlements in the late 1600’s and throughout the 1700’s. As the region grew, the historic trail began seeing stagecoaches and growth.
Aldie was originally named for the first settler’s family castle in Perthshire, Scotland, Aldie Castle. Charles Fenton Mercer built a mill and house in the area and was soon followed by other settlers. These settlers eventually built churches, a brick mill, and many other buildings in the community.
During the Civil War, the area played a significant role, mostly because of its location on the border between the North and the South. The Battle of Aldie is seen as one of the more significant battles that happened just before the Battle of Gettysburg.
Today Loudoun County is one of the fastest growing counties in the entire country. The county is currently home to nearly one thousand federal contracting companies that specialize in information and communication technology. Although Aldie has remained small and unincorporated, the development of Stone Ridge is an example of the county’s growth. As families move to the region they are looking for new housing developments. There are several new developments in the region, including the very successful Brambleton, just to the north.
Things to do
The community is putting forth a great effort to establish a community culture by organizing several events and activities throughout the year. The activity committee is always at work trying to think up events. Currently there is a swim team, book club, floating movie night, card tournaments, little league, and boys and girls scouts. The village center hosts an open mic night, football weekends, and various activities throughout the year. Another annual event is the 5K Race for Education, which raises money for the local schools every October.
Loudoun County offers a lot to do as well. The county is becoming well known for its wine industry. Wine tours and tastings are becoming ever more popular. Currently the county is home to over 40 wineries and growing. A few of the more popular are Casanel Vineyards and Winery, 8 Chains North Winery, Sunset Hill Vineyard, Crushed Cellars, and Goose Creek Farms & Winery. The county is also home to several hundred miles of bike trails, nature trails, park spaces, and waterfront. Loudoun County was voted the happiest county in the entire country for the second year in a row and for good reason. There is so much to do around Stone Ridge.
