History

Although Fairfax county today is primarily a suburban county, the history of the county is rich and interwoven into the early history of the United States. The county was first settled in the 1700s and was named after Thomas Fairfax, an English Lord. The original settlements in the county were along the Potomac River. George Washington was one of the first settlers in the county, building his famous family home, Mount Vernon facing the Potomac River. The county was a central backdrop during the Civil War. The Battle of Chantilly and the second Battle of Bull run were famous battles that took place in the region. Much later when Washington DC became the capital of the United States and the federal government grew, the surrounding counties grew, including Fairfax County.

Today

Fairfax county is one of the more affluent counties in the US, and it was the first county in the US to reach a six-figure median household income. Wolf Trap is one of the popular and more affluent suburbs of Fairfax county. In 2000, the median household income was $135,782. Of the 4,566 households in Wolf Trap, 86% were the homes of married couples living together. The average size of a home in the community was over 3 people per home, and 45% of homes had children. The population of Wolf Trap continues to grow with 15% growth in the last 10 years. The population is slowly becoming more diverse, but currently the community is 86% White, with small percentages from other races.

The community is home to the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. The national park is located on 117 acres of land. The national park is a collaborative effort between the National Park Service and the non-profit Wolf Trap Foundation. The park was originally farmland and it was preserved by a donation of 38 acres of farmland owned by Mrs. Catherine Filene Shouse. Mrs. Shouse gifted the land to Congress in 1966. Congress named the land as the first national park for the performing arts. Currently, the national park runs several performing venues and educational programs. One of the venues, the Filene Center, hosts performances May through September.
