History
Woodburn, Virginia is located near Leesburg, Virginia. Woodburn itself is a farm complex that was originally built in the late 1700’s for the Nixson Family. George Nixson built a stone gristmill that year and a stone miller’s residence about ten years later. Around 50 years later, a descendent of George Nixson built the additional buildings in the complex including the big farmhouse.
Leesburg’s history dates back to just before this time and was originally named George Town after King George II. Lord Fairfax originally held the land. The town was eventually named Leesburg after the Lee family of Virginia. The town has been the county seed of Loudoun County since 1757.
The town of Leesburg was eventually incorporated in 1813. It continued to grow throughout the early 1800’s. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the town was about 2,000 people. Its location gave it an interesting role in the war. The town’s representatives to the Virginia Secession Convention at first voted “no” on secession, but once the state passed its articles of secession the town came around and ratified them. The town was only a few miles away from the border between the Confederacy and the United States and because of which changed hands over 150 times during the war. After the war, the town’s location allowed it to recover faster than many towns further south.
Today, Woodburn and Leesburg are apart of one of the fastest growing counties in the entire country. Loudoun County is home to almost 1,000 federal prime contracting companies that specialize in information and communication technology. The speed of growth in the industries has caused a population boom in the region. The population of Leesburg is almost 53,000 people.

The vicinity of Woodburn offers lots of things to do for people of all ages. There are several parks in the vicinity of Leesburg that are great for all purposes. Some of the most notable parks are: Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park, Historic Morven Park, Temple Hal Farm Regional Park, Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park and Kephart Bridge Landing, Freedom Park, and Olde Izaak Walton Park. There are also several historical sites to see in the area that range from the early history of the country to the Civil War. The most famous of the sites is the Oatlands Historic House and Garden. This National Historic Site offers several educational programs for people of all ages as well as relaxing walks and garden experiences. Another famous spot is the Ball’s Bluff Battlefield and National Cemetery. This historic site was the site of a famous battle of the Civil War. Visitors here can take in the history of the battle as well as take a nice stroll through nature. Additional spots include the Marshall House and Leesburg’s Historic Downtown.
Leesburg is also a short drive away from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Here you will find numerous museums, dining, shopping, nightlife, and entertainment. No matter what you are looking for you are sure to find it in the city.
