What are Implant Retained Dentures

A Look at Modern Dentures

Conventional dentures are often unsatisfactory for people that are missing many or all of their lower and/or upper teeth. Conventional dentures rest on the gums and can feel like they are fitting well initially, but over time as the gums and/or the jawbone change shape they can begin to fit less snuggly and lose the optimal fit. As time goes by the bony ridge (which used to support the teeth that are now missing) doesn’t get the stimulation it used to from the roots of your natural teeth, and so it becomes flatter and more narrow. As this happens the denture become more difficult to wear as comfortably - which can also result in reduced support for facial muscles which can often lead to the kind of collapsed appearance in the face. Sometimes conventional dentures can become so uncomfortable for people that they can’t eat foods that they have long enjoyed. Conventional dentures and questions about their functionality can inspire a lack of confidence for some people, too, especially in eating situations that are social.

Implant-Retained Dentures

While conventional dentures rest along the gums, implant retained dentures are actually “retained” and so don’t move in the mouth. This allows for more comfort and confidence with eating, and can enhance lip and cheek support which can help with restoration of a person’s previous facial dimensions. Instead of resting along the gums, implant retained dentures clip or snap onto dental implants and are secured in place. They can be removed if cleaning is required, but they are strong and stable and an affordable way to eat and speak more comfortably and with more confidence.

For holding the lower implant retained dentures securely, usually just two to four dental implants are required. The lower dentures have only the bony ridge to rely on for support and retention, so there can be more issues with functionality. Replacing upper dentures with implant retained dentures is an option too, but usually there will be a need for more dental implants to offer sufficient support. But, like the lower denture, an upper implant retained denture is shaped like a horseshoe it can allow for uncovering of the upper palate, and is less bulky, as well. This means it is not only more comfortable, but with the palate more exposed a more satisfying experience of taste often occurs which can really help people enjoy eating more and more kinds of foods again.

Who Are Implant-Retained Dentures Best Suited For?

While dental implants are suitable for most people, the implant retained dentures are better suited for those who have had missing teeth for a considerable amount of time, because bone grafts are less likely needed. And, as long as you have reasonable overall health and decent dental health, age is not a limiting factor when considering implant retained dentures. Implant retained dentures can also be an affordable option and there are some real benefits to the implant supported option. As you consult with your dentist make sure to ask any and all questions so that you find the right treatment for you.
