How does Invisalign work?

Using clear aligners instead of a traditional metal, bracket and wire braces can give unobtrusive, quick results. Many adults in the workforce choose to have orthodontic treatment completed using clear aligner therapy as opposed to traditional braces.

Invisalign at Lansdowne Dental Care is the most commonly known brand for clear aligner therapy and here, we will discuss how Invisalign works to straighten your teeth!

Consultation

Once your dentist determines that you’re a candidate, they will take impressions, photos, and x-rays of both the upper and lower jaws. All of this information will be sent to Invisalign so that they can create an animation of your case which will show you step-by-step how your teeth will move and the final results! When your dentist has you in to review your case, it is incredibly important to voice any questions and concerns you may have.

How Invisalign Works

A series of BPA-free clear, plastic trays are custom made to gently and gradually shift your teeth to their new position. The trays are changed every 10 to 14 days and are worn for at least 22 hours per day. You will remove them to eat and for oral hygiene but other than that, they should always be in your mouth.

Sometimes, attachments are required to vertically shift or to rotate a tooth but these attachments are tooth colored and affix to the front of a tooth for a tray to fit over.

How long does it take to complete Invisalign treatment?

The number of trays that your treatment uses will be directly related to how extensive your case is. The more movement that is required, the more trays you will go through. Timeframe can run between six months and 18 months.

You will visit your dentist every 10 to 14 days to get a new set of trays. Sometimes, your dentist may be able to provide you with multiple sets of trays that you can change on your own without visiting your dentist. This will not always be the case but the high success rate for Invisalign comes down to the fact that it is monitored by a dentist, unlike orthodontic treatment through the mail which has recently become popular. Your dentist is able to ensure that your progress is tracking with the treatment plan.

The final step of Invisalign is final retainers! Retainers are necessary to keep their teeth in line because teeth tend to want to be in their original position. You will wear your retainers every night and they will likely need to be replaced every year or so.

Is Invisalign right for me?

Sometimes, people think that orthodontic treatment is purely cosmetic but it is actually beneficial to your health! Overly crowded teeth are very difficult to clean properly which can lead to periodontal disease and other health problems. If you have crooked and crowded teeth, gapped teeth, or malocclusion (a bad bite), all of these things can lead to more serious issues.

Your dentist can help you determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign. If you think you need orthodontic treatment and would like to take the route of clear aligner therapy, Invisalign might be right for you!
