If you have been dreaming and envisioning yourself with a stunning straight smile, but you are turned off by the look of braces, then perhaps Invisalign is the perfect option for you. At Lansdowne Dental Care we pride ourselves on presenting this great option for our patients who choose to straighten their teeth without metal brackets or braces. It can seem odd to think that Invisalign can perform the same amount of quality as braces, however, at Lansdowne, we assure our patients that this form of orthodontics system is both workable and effective!

What is Invisalign?

There are many patients who may be confused about the different forms of braces. There are three options that provide patients different ways to straighten their teeth as they’re all forms of orthodontics. These different options can all be used to improve the alignment of the bite and can straighten the look of teeth which may be misaligned, separated, too close together, and much more.

Braces, clear braces, and Invisalign all provide patients ways to straighten their teeth. So, what are the differences between these three options? Braces and clear braces are forms of orthodontics that require a metal brace that connects all teeth together using either metal brackets or invisible brackets. Invisalign users can enjoy an orthodontic treatment without the use of the wires or brackets as the teeth will become straighter over time. This form is done by using a clear, custom-made
tray that fits over the natural teeth and works its magic invisibly.

Cosmetic dentistry is a category that is also home to the importance of the ability to bite and chew properly. The bite of a mouth is important for a number of reasons for not only to ensure the patient has good function while chewing but also while speaking and of course smiling confidently. The use of an orthodontic treatment like Invisalign will aid in preventing issues like jaw pain, headaches, and even wear and tear on the teeth. So, aside from straightening your teeth for aesthetic reasons, Invisalign is also beneficial for your oral health and confidence altogether.

What is the difference between ordinary braces and Invisalign?

Simple braces take their name from brackets. These brackets are individually glued to each tooth that can be later corrected and adjusted as needed. There will be a top and bottom wire that will run through these brackets, and when applied effectively, the wires will slowly be tightened every month to shift the adult teeth into better alignment.

Drs. Tracey Nguyen, Steven Frames, and the LDC team uses a series of custom-made trays that slide over your teeth to fit every inch and corner, invisibly. Each custom-made trays are tailored to every single person’s individual smile. The trays are created in the lab using exact measurements and specific impressions of your mouth. Every two weeks, the patient will swap out a series of trays that will slowly but surely adjust the alignment of the teeth every two weeks. Each tray will gently shift your teeth into a better position in a way that very similarly compares to braces- without needing the brackets and wires!

Every patient will need to come in periodically for a checkup with Drs. Tracey Nguyen, Steven Frames, and the LDC team. Your progress will be evaluated, and more trays can be added if they are necessary. Most patients might need this form of orthodontics for less than a year. However, depending on the severity of the misalignment, some patients may need this treatment for up to two years.

Are You a Candidate For Invisalign?

Generally, almost all issues can be corrected with this form of orthodontics. Some conditions include underbites, overbites, cross bites, and much more. However, if the patient requires for certain teeth to be extracted, before this orthodontic treatment, or if they have severely misaligned teeth, then perhaps they may not be an ideal candidate for this treatment.

If you are unsure of whether or not you are a good candidate for this orthodontic treatment, call Drs. Tracey Nguyen, Steven Frames or the rest of the team in Lansdowne to discuss your options. It is important to remember that once you have decided you would like to move forward with the Invisalign treatment, you must remain committed to the program because nearly 90% of the alignment of your teeth lies in your own hands.

For example, a patient must remove the custom-made trays when they eat, drink, or perform any oral hygiene routine. You can only have the trays removed from your mouth for up to two hours a day without any negative effects. You must be fully committed to ensuring the trays are inserted in your mouth when you’re not doing any of the above daily routines. One of the great reasons why this form of orthodontics is better than the traditional braces treatment is that braces force you to alter your diet.
Many patients with traditional braces are forced to eliminate some fruits and vegetables as well as sticky foods and hard candies. Invisalign doesn’t require such things!

You must be sure to wear these custom trays at the amount of time that are required. You must also take good care of the trays and properly care for them by cleaning them several times each day. You must use a soft brush to brush the trays as well as rinse them with lukewarm water. There are Invisalign cleaning kits available at our Lansdowne office.
