Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement in Leesburg, VA

While Invisalign has quickly become a popular orthodontic treatment alternative to traditional braces, one of the biggest drawbacks to this treatment historically has been that it has not been able to help patients who had severe malocclusions. Thanks to advancements in orthodontic research, it is now possible to correct severe malocclusions by using Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement, which will give you that straight, healthy looking smile you have always dreamed of.

The traditional method for correcting malocclusions has been Herbst appliances, headgear, extractions, and/or metal braces, which use elastics that hook from the lower jaw to the upper jaw to apply steady force to draw the lower jaw forward. Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement aligners removes the need for these brackets, and instead uses BPA-free plastic, FDA-approved clear aligners combined with precision wings, which interlock to hold the lower jaw forward and which are located on the lower and upper aligners. Whenever the patients bites down, these wings eliminate the overjet by holding the lower jaw forward. For younger patients who are still growing, the aligners continue to align the teeth while the wings correct the bite by moving the lower jaw forward.

Please note: mandibular advancement is only a viable treatment option for Invisalign Teen, because unlike adults, teens jaws are still growing, and as such, they are able to be pulled forward using orthodontic treatment. Adults who have a malocclusion that could be corrected with mandibular advancement may require surgery to correct their issue.

Advantages of Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement

Unlike standard mandibular advancement, which requires patients to be compliant with wearing the elastics, the precision wings are always in the patient’s mouth while they are wearing their aligners. These aligners will still have to be worn at least 22 hours a day in order to be effective, however, and should only be removed when the patient is eating, drinking, brushing and/or flossing. It will also be necessary to continue changing your aligners every one to two weeks.

Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement is a popular treatment option for several reasons, which include the following:

  • Discreetly correct your occlusion, allowing you to smile confidently throughout the treatment process
  • Effective solution for correcting your overbite while also straightening your teeth
  • Removable, which allows you to comfortably enjoy your meals
  • Allows you to continue enjoying your favorite foods
  • Will not interfere with playing instruments or sports
  • Minimizes the need to modify your oral hygiene routine and retains your ability to brush and floss
  • More comfortable than traditional braces
  • Requires fewer appointments compared to traditional braces
  • More affordable than traditional treatment options for mandibular advancement
  • Treatment is customized to your unique needs
  • Reduced likelihood of emergency visits

Frequently Asked Questions About Overbites and Mandibular Advancement

If your child has been recommended for Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement, you may have several questions about the nature of this procedure, how necessary it is, and why this treatment option is being recommended instead of other treatment options. Please review these frequently asked questions concerning this treatment approach.

 How long does treatment take?

The length of time necessary to correct your child’s overbite and straighten their teeth will depend largely on the severity of their malocclusion and how compliant they are with wearing their aligners. On average, treatment time can be completely as quickly as six months or may take up to two years. To ensure that treatment time is as fast as possible, make sure your teenager is wearing their aligners the required 22 hours minimum per day.

Is it necessary to correct my overbite?

If you have an overbite and/or misaligned teeth, it is important to address this issue with treatment such as Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement. Doing so will help ensure you avoid developing oral health issues in the future, which can occur when your top and bottom arches do not meet correctly. This malocclusion creates a bite that is inherently unstable and unbalanced and can lead to abnormal wear and unnecessary damage.

As an adult, am I a candidate for Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement?

Unfortunately, Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement is not a viable treatment option for adults, as there is no growth potential that can be manipulated, as is the case with children and teenagers. There are other alternative treatment options for adults with an overbite, such as interach elastics, extraction of teeth, and/or jaw surgery.

Will this treatment change the shape of my child’s face?

Invisalign Mandibular Advancement will result in a change in the profile of your child’s face, but these changes are overwhelmingly positive, in that they will improve their overall facial profile and jaw alignment.

How much will Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement cost?

The cost of Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement will depend largely on the severity of your child’s case and how long treatment is necessary. In some cases, treatment can be completed in as quickly as six months, whereas other cases may require up to two years. During your initial consultation, we will discuss the complexity of your child’s case and what your anticipated costs will be.
