Invisalign® for Children
We Change Lives By Creating Beautiful Smiles
Invisalign for Children in Leesburg, VA
While Invisalign treatment for straightening teeth has traditionally been reserved for older patients, Invisalign First now can now straighten teeth for children between the ages of 6 to 10 whose teeth are still growing, eliminating the need for traditional metal braces. The custom designed Invisalign trays will expand your child’s jawline gradually over a period of time to correct alignment issues, make room for incoming teeth, and/or avoid oral issues from developing in the future.
It is recommended that your child have their first evaluation with an orthodontist around their 7th birthday. While many children will not require orthodontic treatment, it is important to schedule this early evaluation in case there are orthodontic issues that require early intervention. By providing early interceptive treatment while your child has mixed dentition (combination of baby and permanent teeth), you may be able to avoid a number of alignment issues or other severe problems that can develop later and ensure that your child has a good foundation for when their permanent teeth do erupt.
Invisalign First may be used to address any of the following issues that may be identified at this appointment:
- Aesthetic alignment
- A-P correction
- Arch development
- Expansion
- Tooth crowding and spacing
- Tooth interferences or protrusions
While Invisalign First is designed specifically for young children, there are alternative Invisalign treatments available for teenagers and adults who are looking to straighten their teeth, including Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Full, and Invisalign Express. At Lansdowne Dental Care, we recognize that every patient has a unique smile, and we are committed to working diligently to help your child receive the care they need. If your child is scheduled for an Invisalign appointment, or if you have any questions about Invisalign for Children or other Invisalign treatment options, please contact us at 703.844.4403.
Invisalign First Process
The ultimate goal of Invisalign First is to gradually expand and contour your child’s jawline. This process, known as dental arch expansion, involves widening your child’s dental arch by pushing their teeth over an extended period of time. During your child’s initial evaluation, Dr. Nguyen or Dr. Frame will conduct a thorough examination of their smile and create a digital step-by-step treatment plan using our iTero scanner.
Once this plan is in place, your child’s aligners will be created in a lab and customized to comfortably fit your child’s specific mouth, a process that typically takes a few weeks. Depending on the severity of your child’s case, one aligner may be sufficient to provide them with the correction they need, or a full pair of aligners may be required for more severe alignment issues. In some cases, attachments, which are designed to place pressure on necessary teeth may also be placed on the surface of certain teeth that have particular alignment issues.
Once the aligners are ready, it is important that your child wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat or clean them or to replace their next set of aligners, which typically occurs every one or two weeks. Each set of aligners that is placed is designed to gradually and gently shift their teeth into alignment. Throughout the tray replacement process, it will be necessary to come in for regular checkups with our team so we can evaluate your child’s progress, and if necessary, add more trays to their treatment plan.
